Very few cases submitted to the Supreme Court are actually heard. The ones selected make important decisions about the
rights of citizens, states, lawmakers, and everyone. The job of the legislative branch is to interpret the laws, and in this
way the Supreme Court decides what is meant by basic rights given in federal law and most importantly, the Constitution. These
fifteen cases each set a precedent for an issue, which means the decision must be followed in all future similar occurrences.
They determine what to do in the specific case and all the times it will happen again.
