MGM and several other corporations sued Grokster, Kazaa, and Morpheus because the users were illegally sharing pirated and otherwise obtained material with other users of the service. The court ruled that if there was a legitimate use of the company, that they couldn't be held responsible for the individual users of their service. They ruled that the users themselves could be sued, but the companies weren't responsible for the illegal filesharing.
