The case determined rule of law. Richard Nixon denied to follow a subpoena to turn over documents to a court, claiming he had executive power and could refuse.

Nixon claimed he was immune because he was the president. He said he had the power to keep his documents confidential as part of his power. The court did not agreed, and ruled that even though he was the president, he had to follow the same laws as the rest of the country. He did not have special status to ignore the laws or the subpoena, despite his presidential status. President Nixon was forced to turn over the documents to the court.
